The jimmy carter center is interesting though not nearly as popular as the MLK memorial. It still has a lot of information. Carter is not as popular as MLK but he did accomplish a lot. When visiting you start out going through a theater. The people encourage pictures but no flash so some are blurry because of underexposure. You go through a theater then walk along a wall that has several presidents and the things they accomplished then there is a semi circle area that goes through his life chronologically. Above this is the presidential library which you cannot go in. then there is my favorite area which is the gifts area. There are several cases that have all the things that had been given to carter. There are a lot of dining things, an elephant tusks, vases, and many other things. There is a vase with the graveyard scene from hamlet. There are several wall that are specific to events that carter had to deal with including the middle east and necleur insecurity. There is a lot of information about the panama canal issue. There is also an art area where there are pictures of naval vessels. Carter was in the navy. This was an interesting expeiriencefor me because it made me realize that there are a lot of presidents you don’t know much or anything about but they have done incredible things that because they are not associated with a major event like a war they go unnoticed. A lot of the stuff at the jimmy carter center was completely new to me. There is a tour you can do but the guide is slow and basically is saying what you could read. There is a room that is a replica of the way the oval office was when carter was president. There is a peace arch way as well. And movies do play in the theater but I did not catch it at the right time.

Before this last visit I had been to the MLK three other times. I was going to try to cheat and use the pictures from my last visit, which was for a school project, but then I realized I went during the spring so there were flowers leaves and grass everywhere, pretty sure that was not going to work. so I went again and figure I was there anyway so I took a look around again. The very first visit I went on I did the entire tour of the house ect so I didn’t feel the need to do it again. But this has been my experience with the MLK memorial collectively over my four visits. Over the past couple years they have been remodeling it first with the initial walkway now they’re doing something on the side. I’m not too sure what. The first thing you come up to at the walkway is a statue of ghandi which on my first three visits I did not understand but on this last one I was reading one of the timelines and found out that MLK stayed in India for a bit of time to learn the non-violent ways of ghandi. Going into the main center is free and there is a lot to be seen. Though it is not very big through the videos and information on the walls there is a lot. One of my favorite things to look at are the responses in the books near the front. There are some really inspirational things then there are things that are just amusing. I don’t really get the display in the center. I understand it is showing a lot of different people but it is kinda creepy. On this trip I learned that the first African American college student to attend I think LSU was shot at an MLK march. This was at my last visit and not my first two but there is a new room on the right side with recordings from the assassination and other pictures. You are now allowed to take pictures in this room. Ive been to the MLK house and done the tour. You start at the fire station then go to the house and through the rooms the tour guide explains all of them. Then you go to Ebenezer church where it is thoroughly emphasized kids are not to touch anything. This cite ties in with the FLC in it represents an important part of our history. MLK was a major attribute to the civil rights movement. He was inspirational and showed the world violence and war is not the only way to change things.

I learned that I really should not wait to the last minute to do simple assignments that collectively if left unfinished could casue me a failing grade in a glass that shouldbe a given A because then you just have to really hope your professor is having a good week even though she has been having to deal with grading exams and the several page essays we all did. That seriously is one thing but I have been also rediscovering who I am and expanding my point of view on the world. Im beginning to understand a lot of things I did not understand before and learning different perspectives people have on life, and I love every minute of it. Ive really felt inspired to take in as much as I can in order to have a better understanding of the world and why people do the things they do. Im finding that the first take you have on a person is almost always wrong because while you can see them in front of you you cannot see their history so you never know what is really going on. Ive learned the more you know the more power you have because you have more of an ability to influence people. Ive learned college is not something you do because it is the standard and don’t just get by take it all in, and develop yourself through all the opportunity that is offered.

There is not an ultimet truth. The truth often relies on what a person knows and from what point of view that person sees the world from. The truth is often cloudy. Given any situation different people can look at it and come up with truths that they see but others may not agree with. Religion is one of those things that has many different perspective and causes many truths some even contradicting others. For example looking at Christianity there are many branches that have the things that they believe to be true but other parts of Christianity think of it as bogus and unnecessary. Like mormons and catholics they believe in the same god but what they believe god means for mankind to do and how to do it is very different. And even in the bible different truths can be take depending on how the person interpret

Literature does not occur in a vacuum. And because literature does not occur in a vacuum naturally it is going to coincide with history. Literature can be used to understand what the people were thinking and feeling at certain times in history. History presetns the facts literature shows the mentality of the people. For example Wheatly lived during a time of slavery and through her work you can understand how she felt about it, she felt it had saved her, but knowing her history it is understood why she thought like that. Then there is Fredrick douglass around the same time but had a very different view. His literary work showed his mentality. And through out literature the historical events are reflected.

The pledge of allegiance says a good thing but its meaning has been lost. From kindergarden through high school we have had to say the pledge everyday. I know at my high school even they did not do it first thing in the morning so they could catch the stragglers. But the theing with the pledge is we have been doing it since we were in kindergarten. In kindergarden they didn’t tell us why we were doing it we just had to. So we’ve been doing this thing for years but have put very little meaning in it. While I have a lot of pride in being american, I feel the pledge has lost meaning and should not be forced to be said.

There are a lot of ideas about America I had to break. The biggest one was that America is a happy equal place. and not everything is just. The way I was brought up I was sheltered from all the “bad.” and the idea that everyone can make it if they want and everyone has the same chances is all bs. I realized some people just are at a disadvantage and some people no matter how hard you work you are not going to make it. And our justice is not always justice. Things are not equal. There is a glass ceiling and there is a group of people who run this country and if your not in that group then you are at a disadvantage.

Asia Johnson

Walker

American literature

December 2008

Emerson’s “Experience”

Emerson wrote many essays, and within his essays many ideas were presented. One essay in particular had within it many ideas that make a powerful statement is “Experience” a lot of the reason “experience hits home for me is because a lot of the ideas in experience are things that I have realized and recognized in my own life. Particularly ideas on grief and “anchors.”

Experience is unique from Emerson’s other essays in that it actually goes into detail on the events that took place in Emerson’s life that influenced the view from which he wrote the essay. His son had died before this essay antimerism actually talks about it and the effects it has had on him. He goes into detail about how grief is a tool people use to try and find reality and reprieve from hurt. But Emerson believed that this was not possible and that grief does nothing for a person but teach them how to deal with grief better the next time it comes around. After talking about this idea Emerson talks about if he were to loose all his land now it would not effect him because the loss of his son is on such a higher magnitude that the loss of his property would have no effect. There is a lot of truth to this idea. People that have suffered major loss in their lives, may come across other difficulties but because that pain does not compare to the pain they felt before the new difficulties have little effect.

Also in experience Emerson talks about the way people experience life is based on the way they view it. Emerson talks about how peoples moods and attitude toward event untimely determines how that event goes in their life. Again this idea is a basic one and if any one person would think about it then they would more than likely come to the same conclusion, but Emerson actually states it. In any given event, if multiple people are present then depending on there background, prior bias, and position, the same experience can be very different for an individual.

Probably the most interesting idea in “experience” is when Emerson talks about “anchors.” this idea is of particular interest to me because it is something I recognized a in the last year. Before I had read any of Emerson’s work though I thought of it by a different name. An “anchor” is a person that another uses to keep themselves grounded. Emerson explains this in “experience.” the problem with an anchor is that they cannot always be there. This brings everything back to one of Emerson’s main ideas being that every individual must rely on themselves because really that is the only person in any individuals life that is guaranteed to be there all the time.

Throughout “Experience” Emerson talks about how things that happen in peoples past ultimately effect who they are. Starting in childhood all that a person goes through makes them who they are. “the plays of children are nonsense, but very educative nonsense” is a line that gives an example of this idea. In more detail, this statement is explaining how the games children play may seem ridiculous but all the games are teaching the children something about life.

The most amazing thing about “Experience” is nearly any sentence can be taken individually and analyzed. Any one sentence can be developed into a larger idea. “I am thankful for small mercies,” a single sentence in a larger m idea, but it can be developed into an entire new idea on its own. The idea that in life it is the small things, relief’s, that Emerson is thankful for. And any person can go on and develop that idea into a larger one.

Emerson’s essay “Experience” is not one that is particularly known, but it has many ideas that are more than relevant to life. He takes the simple ideas and puts them together to create a much larger picture. The picture being life.
